The experts performed several studies on people who sleep less and their performance in daily tasks is low. Without sleep a human is the parallel of a car without fuel. One of the most important role of sleep is that it allows the human brain to refresh, refuel and restart for a new day. When you deprive your body of that refuelling, your body responds in a dangerous manner. Narcolepsy is a sleeping disorder that results from a messed up sleeping routine.
What is Narcolepsy?
Termed as a chronic neurological disorder; narcolepsy targets the part of your brain that controls your sleep. It is a very common disorder that affects every 1 in 2000 people and results in intense drowsiness and daytime sleep. The patient suffers from narcolepsy more in a surrounding that is calm and silent (like sitting in a library, coffee shop or park). Narcolepsy also affects your memory, concentration, work flow, studying pace, driving abilities and causes cataplexy.
Before knowing about the treatment to this disease it is important to understand what causes it in the first place. Most conducted studies boil down to the issue of “genetics”. If someone in your family or ancestry suffered from narcolepsy then you are more likely to also suffer from it. On the other hand other reasons include viruses or a trigger of some sort. The virus usually robs you from a vital brain chemical called “hypocretin” which helps in keeping you awake and regulates your sleep.
If the doctor diagnoses you with narcolepsy, he or she can advise you medicines. Ritalin, Provigil, Nuvigil, Xyrem and antidepressants are all common forms of treatment for this disorder. But, do bear in mind that each drug has its own list of specifications that can work in your favor and also against. So, take the medicine ONLY when a licensed physician or health expert recommends you.
Other treatments include changing your lifestyle and habits such as including exercise in your routine, scheduling naps during your day and taking extra care to maintain a regular undisturbed sleep schedule. Avoiding very heavy and greasy foods as well as alcohol helps in providing you with good and healthy sleep that can help you narcolepsy.
